An iced matcha latte combines the flavour of powdered Japanese green tea with the creaminess of milk. To make it, first whisk the matcha with a little hot water, then add it to cold milk and ice.
Here are the ingredients and step-by-step instructions for making one serving at home.
Ingredients for one serving
- 2 g Organic Matcha Izumi or Organic Matcha Tsuki
- 30 ml water at around 80 °C
- 150 ml well-chilled milk
- Enough ice cubes to fill the glass, leaving room for the liquids
- Sugar to taste, optional
Preparation time: around 5 minutes.
Equipment needed
You will need a bowl, a fine-mesh sieve, a scale suitable for small quantities, a measuring jug, a teaspoon and a large glass. To mix the matcha, use a chasen, the traditional bamboo whisk, or a small whisk.
How to make an iced matcha latte
- Sift the matcha. Weigh 2 g of powder and sift it into the bowl to break up any small lumps.
- Add the hot water. Pour in 30 ml of water at around 80 °C, avoiding boiling water.
- Whisk with the chasen. Use quick zigzag movements for around 15 seconds, until the mixture is smooth and lightly frothy. With a small whisk, continue until no visible lumps remain.
- Sweeten if desired. Add a little sugar while the matcha is still warm and stir to dissolve.
- Prepare the glass. Add the ice and pour in 150 ml of well-chilled milk.
- Add the matcha. Pour the prepared matcha over the milk, stir and taste. Adjust the sweetness to your liking and serve immediately.
How to avoid lumps
Sift the matcha before adding the water and prepare it separately from the milk. Whisk thoroughly, checking the bottom and sides of the bowl, and only pour the mixture into the glass once it is smooth.
Which milk to use and how to adjust the sweetness
You can use dairy milk or a plant-based alternative, such as soy or oat, keeping the quantity at 150 ml. The flavour and texture will vary depending on the product you choose.
Sugar is optional: add it a little at a time and taste before adding more, especially if you are using an already sweetened plant-based drink.
