Rooibos, Afrikaans for “red bush”, is an infusion made by processing the needle-like leaves of Aspalathus linearis, a shrub that grows in South Africa’s Cederberg mountain region.
It belongs to the legume family and grows as a bush with deep green leaves, slender stems and small yellow flowers. During oxidation, the leaves turn mahogany in colour, giving rise to the name “red tea”, although rooibos does not come from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis.
Naturally caffeine-free, rooibos can be enjoyed at any time of day, including in the evening. Its smooth, rounded and naturally sweet taste features delicate notes of hazelnut and wood.
Delicious both hot and cold, it can be enjoyed on its own or with a little honey and a splash of milk.
Rooibos properties and potential health benefits
Rooibos is also valued for its polyphenols, compounds studied for their antioxidant activity. Some human studies have shown promising results regarding markers of oxidative stress, but clinical evidence remains limited and does not establish definitive therapeutic effects for the infusion.
How to prepare hot rooibos
To prepare La Via del Tè’s pure rooibos, use 2.5 grams per 200 ml of water at 90°C. Steep for 5 minutes, then strain and serve.
For flavoured blends, follow the instructions on the packaging or product page.
How to prepare iced rooibos
Prepare the hot infusion following the same instructions, then strain, allow it to cool slightly and place it in the refrigerator. Serve chilled, on its own or with a little honey, stirred in while the infusion is still hot.
